Narsil, in Quenya (language of the Elves), stood for the duality of Sun+Moon. (As in the books) When it was broken in the battle against Sauron, it split into two, and later reforged and carried everywhere by Aragorn. But Mr. Jackson would rather have it break into 6 pieces, and then stay encased on a mantle.
